They don't actually know why it happened and that point is made consistently in the book/movie. I think it's very important that no one understands and no one knows why they killed themselves. That's why it's so tragic. It can't be resolved.

I’ve pretty much come to the conclusion that one of the main reasons they killed themselves is because they weren’t of this earth.

It makes it more different & exhilarating.

It’s like they were freeing themselves from cages, by killing themselves.
